What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is an international measure used to assess whether a person is at a healthy weight relative to their height. It is calculated by dividing weight (in kg) by the square of height (in meters).
Frequently asked questions
Is BMI enough to evaluate health?
BMI is a simple, useful indicator but does not consider muscle mass, fat distribution or age. Athletes can have a high BMI yet still be healthy. Use it as a reference and consult a doctor for a full evaluation.
What is an ideal BMI?
According to the WHO, a normal BMI for adults is between 18.5 and 24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight; 25 and above indicates overweight.
Does it work for children?
For children and teens, BMI is calculated the same way but classified using age- and sex-specific growth charts. This calculator uses WHO criteria for adults.
How often should I check my BMI?
Once a month is enough to follow long-term trends. Body weight naturally varies 1–3 kg through the day due to hydration and meals.
